Angkor Tom was built from the late 12th century to early 13th centruy by Jayavarman VII. It was the capital of the Khmer empire, and is of Buddhist nature. The main monument here is Bayon which is approached by a causeway lined on one side with 54 gods, and the other with 54 demons. The faces on the towers are of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Here too, the walls are carved with wonderful bas reliefs depicting mythical scenes, as well as scenes of daily life.
