The Acropolis
Pictures of the Acropolis.
The first temples of the Acropolis were built during the Mycenaean times, but were destroyed by wars. They were rebuilt in the 5th century BC by Pericles. The site is dominated by the Parthanon which is dedicated to Athena, and was completed in 438 BC. It was heavily damaged in 1687 when it was shelled by the Venetians, setting off the munitions that the Turks had stored there. The Propylala serves as the enterance to the Acropolis and was completed in 432 BC. The Erechtheion is the monument supported by six maidens and was dedicate to both Athena and Poseidon. Below the Acropolis is the theater of Herod Atticus, built in 161 AD, and still in use.
